Western Iowa has a full season of light displays without ever crossing the river: downtown Council Bluffs around Bayliss Park, Glenwood's courthouse square, and neighborhood drives through Council Bluffs, Treynor, and Glenwood. Most displays run from late November through early January — check each venue's current schedule before you go.
Downtown Council Bluffs: Bayliss Park
The heart of Council Bluffs glows every December, centered on Bayliss Park downtown, where the fountain, trees, and surrounding streets light up for the season.
It's free, it's walkable, and pairing it with dinner downtown makes an easy family evening. Weeknights are quieter if you want the lights without the crowds.
Glenwood's courthouse square
Glenwood's town square already feels like a postcard in December — the courthouse, the storefronts, and the surrounding historic homes make it one of the most charming holiday stops in Western Iowa.
Park once and walk the square, then finish with a slow drive through the neighborhoods around Glenwood Lake Park.
The neighborhood drives
Some of the best displays in Western Iowa aren't ticketed events — they're residential streets where homeowners go all-out.
Cruise the established neighborhoods of Council Bluffs, the historic blocks around Fairview, and the newer developments around Glenwood and Treynor. Small towns punch above their weight here — one glowing roofline tends to start a friendly arms race down the whole block.
Pro tip from people who install lights for a living: the best viewing window is 6–9 PM. Most residential displays run on timers and shut off by 10.

How to spot a professional install while you drive
Once you know what to look for, you'll see it everywhere. Professional displays have lines that start and stop exactly at the roofline edges, evenly spaced bulbs with no sag between clips, and one consistent warm white across the whole house — the signature of custom-cut C9 LEDs.
DIY displays, even good ones, usually show the tells: a gap at one corner, a bunched-up section at another, and two slightly different whites where strands came from different store runs.
Want your house on someone's drive route?
Every season, a few homes become the ones neighbors detour to see. If you'd like yours to be one of them, every season and not just December, we design and install permanent smart lighting across Western Iowa — here's what it costs by neighborhood, and the custom design is free.
